A 22-year-old connected to at least six other arson cases in Colorado Springs has been arrested for a sixth time, city police announced Friday.

Officers arrested Brandon Hugney Thursday in connection with a fire that was intentionally set in the 1500 block of Space Center Drive, according to a blotter entry from the Colorado Springs Police Department. It is one of seven arson cases that police have linked him to, according to previous Gazette reporting.

While searching for Hugney on Thursday evening, detectives noticed a second fire that was set in the Sand Creek Drainage near Galley Road and Space Center Drive. Police found Hugney and arrested him about 300 feet from the second fire.

He was charged with two counts of firing woods and prairies and booked into the El Paso County jail.

Hugney was first arrested after Colorado Springs police linked him to six separate fires between December 2024 and August 2025:

• Dec. 10, 2024: Several items were set on fire inside an occupied apartment building on East Bijou Street. A tenant extinguished the fire before any injury or significant structural damage could occur. 
• Dec. 21, 2024: A vehicle was set on fire in the 100 block of South Union Boulevard. The car, which had a value of $22,000, was totaled. Hugney was arrested in connection with both fires.
• Feb. 19, 2025: Hugney was arrested after allegedly starting two grass fires and two dumpster fires. The fires were only 10 feet away from the Graybar building, putting the $978,000 building in severe danger, police said at the time.
• April 21, 2025: An unoccupied commercial building was set on fire in the 800 block of Citadel Drive at the unoccupied Joe’s Crab Shack.
• June 13, 2025: A grass fire was set in the 1500 block of Space Center Drive, behind a car wash, endangering people nearby.
• Aug. 11, 2025: A fire was set behind a building in the area of Wooten Road and Geiger Boulevard.

Hugney faced several charges in connection with those fires, including first-degree arson, second-degree arson, fourth-degree arson and intentionally setting a wildfire, according to previous Gazette reports.

No injuries have been reported in any of the incidents.

According to Police Department spokeswoman Caitlin Ford, Hugney has either bonded out or been released each time he has been arrested. She said she was not sure why he has been allowed to do so.

Ford also said Hugney has “reduced mental capacity” and has a legal guardian.

“He historically runs away from his guardian and then proceeds to start fires. While he is court ordered to wear a GPS monitor, he has not been compliant in that court order,” Ford said. “I would say, depending on the decisions made in this current case, he is at risk for doing this again.”
