New tacos and tortas spot blends family tradition with street food flair | Table Talk

The logo for Don Turi’s Tacos & Tortas does more than brand a new restaurant. It visually bridges generations of a Colorado Mexican restaurant family while signaling a bold, street food-driven turn.

A sombrero, a familiar mustache and the restaurant’s name beneath — each element intentionally tied to the González family story behind Tres Margaritas and its newest concept in Colorado Springs.

“The name Don Turi’s Tacos & Tortas is a nod to honor my grandpa, Arturo. Turi is a nickname for Arturo,” co-owner Arturo González III said. “My dad, Arturo González Jr., was one of the founders of Tres Margaritas in Colorado, first working in Las Margaritas in Washington state before becoming a partner.”

Tres Margaritas is well known for classic plates and family-friendly dining rooms. Don Turi’s, 4423 Centennial Blvd., leans into something more compact and casual. González even points to an unlikely influence, Chick-fil-A.

“I like the way they approach expansion and infrastructure,” he said. “We’re looking at two to three concepts for this street food-style restaurant.”

The mustache honors his father and the sombrero represents González, a charro, which is a traditional Mexican horseman whose attire includes a distinctive, wide-brimmed hat.

The menu mirrors the concept: small, streamlined and affordably priced tacos and tortas built with care. Corn tortillas are made fresh daily. Ingredients are simple with clean and direct flavors.

Everything we sampled delivered above-average flavor, but the standout was the bacon-flamed chile relleno burrito ($15). Any burrito can be bacon-wrapped for a $2 upcharge — a Sonoran-style influence González was eager to explain.

“We use high-quality bacon, then the burrito is cooked on a flattop and turned until the bacon is crispy on all sides,” he said.

The cheese-filled chile relleno melts into a gooey center, balanced by charro beans and a choice of protein. Indulgent, filling and unmistakably playful.

Open 8 a.m.–7 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays, and 8 a.m.–8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Details: 719-896-5610, facebook.com/DonTuris.
