Colorado Springs Police Department K9 Roam has medically retired after suffering multiple stab wounds during an incident in the line of duty in October, the department announced on Monday.

Roam was assigned to his handler, Officer Robert Comstock, in March and they received certification in August, allowing them to “hit the streets.” Comstock described Roam’s career as successful despite its brevity and said the incident that ended it has been tough on him and his family.

The K9 suffered three stab wounds during a domestic dispute that required him to receive several blood transfusions and have his left hind leg amputated, according to previous reporting by The Gazette.

Comstock did not believe Roam would survive his injuries, and every day since has “been a blessing.” Roam, a trained gun apprehension dog, spent his time off duty with Comstock and his family.

“It’s been tough on my wife because they’re part of the family,” Comstock said during a press conference Monday. “For me, it’s been extremely difficult because our partner was hurt and at that particular time there was nothing I could do to help him.”

Roam will have a new role as a special department ambassador at some point and will attend different events for CSPD.

Anthony Bryant, the suspect who allegedly injured Roam, appeared to be suffering from hallucinations and expressed remorse for stabbing the K9 to police, according to the arrest affidavit obtained by The Gazette.

He will appear in court on Feb. 11 for an initial appearance on the following charges:

– First-degree burglary armed with explosives or weapon

– Use of a weapon in a violent crime

– Second-degree burglary of a dwelling

– Aggravated cruelty to animals

– Aggravated cruelty to law enforcement animals

– Cruelty to service or law enforcement animal

– Failure to leave the premises with a weapon

– Obstruction of a peace officer

– Obstruction of law enforcement animal

– Second-degree tampering
