Hundreds gather at Colorado Springs City Hall to protest second deadly ICE shooting in Minneapolis

The second deadly shooting of a U.S. citizen by federal agents in Minnesota brought hundreds of protesters to the steps of City Hall in Colorado Springs on Sunday despite below-freezing temperatures and steady snowfall.

Coordinated by the Colorado Springs Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, 50501 and other activist groups, the protest was in response to the shooting death of Alex Pretti, 37, during an immigration crackdown in Minneapolis on Saturday.

It was the second such incident in less than three weeks.

On Jan. 7, Renee Good was fatally shot in Minneapolis while driving her vehicle. Good, a Colorado Springs native and Coronado High School graduate, was 37.

The circumstances of both shootings are in dispute, with federal officials saying the agents fired in self-defense and others insisting that neither Good nor Pretti represented a threat to the authorities at the time they were shot.

The federal agent shot Pretti on Saturday after the Department of Homeland Security said Pretti approached agents armed with a handgun. DHS did not specify if Pretti brandished the gun.

Video reviewed by the Washington Examiner shows Pretti holding a cellphone, as he tries to intervene with a federal agent pushing a woman to the ground. The agent pepper-sprays Pretti. Soon, at least five agents attempt to subdue Pretti, according to the Examiner’s video review.

While Pretti is on the ground, one agent appears to remove Pretti’s weapon from his waistband and away from the scene. Another agent points his gun at Pretti and multiple shots ring out, according to the Examiner’s review.

“This was not self-defense — it was murder,” said protester Elly Sewell on Sunday. “It’s not OK to stand by as this is happening. My grandfather was an immigrant, and I can’t stand silent while people like him are being assaulted.”

Both shootings took place during an ongoing federal immigration enforcement operation called Operation Metro Surge. Beginning in Minnesota in December, the crackdown has sparked a heated national debate about the constitutionality of ICE tactics.

In Colorado Springs, the sidewalk in front of City Hall was packed with protesters on Sunday afternoon, carrying signs with slogans like “It’s Time to De-ICE” and “Justice for Alex Pretti.”

Sunday’s protest was at least the third demonstration at City Hall in the past three weeks. On Jan. 4, about 200 people turned out in protest of a U.S. military operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

“No single protest is going to do anything,” said Mark Qualls of 5051. “But the more protests we have, the more unity we build, and that’s what we’ve got to have if we’re going to stop these terrible things from happening.”

Qualls said he expected Sunday’s turnout to reach several hundred despite the wintry conditions.

“It is freezing cold, and the Broncos are playing,” he said. “But this is more important than a game.”
