Owen Beckner returns as Colorado College routs Simon Fraser in exhibition
Colorado College hockey made the most of a light schedule this weekend in a rout of visiting Simon Fraser during Saturday’s exhibition.
CC won by a 8-3 margin at Ed Robson Arena in the Tigers’ only contest of the weekend.
Sophomore top-line center Owen Beckner returned from an upper-body injury suffered on Nov. 29 against Providence. The Ottawa Senators’ draft pick quickly returned to form, scoring CC’s first goal of the second period and the team’s third goal of the contest at the 3:52 mark.
Three Tigers scored twice in the contest. Sophomore top-line right wing Gavin Lindberg scored the game’s opening goal at 7:55 of the first period and earned a second tally on the power play at the 1:46 mark of the third period.
Tigers junior right wing Bret Link scored on the power play at 18:19 of the first period and again at 16:16 of the second. Freshman center Connor Hvidston scored twice for the Tigers in the middle frame, first at 13:15 and again at 17:11.
CC’s 19th skater in freshman Merril Steenari rounded out the team’s scoring with a goal with just under two seconds remaining in the game.
Tigers senior captain and goaltender Kaidan Mbereko received the night off as freshman Jackson Unger earned the start. He played for just over 55 minutes and made seven saves.
Fellow freshman netminder Beckham Dempsey also saw the ice. He finished with a save.
The Tigers outshot Simon Fraser by a 49-11 margin.
“I thought it was good for us, kind of get back to it. Felt better doing that tonight than having a bye weekend in between the schedule,” CC coach Kris Mayotte said after the game. “I think that helped us become a better hockey team and gave us some stuff to build on this week.”
The Tigers return to regular-season and National Collegiate Hockey Conference play next week, traveling to Omaha.
