The Fort Carson soldier accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a woman last summer at Quail Lake had his case set for trial Monday, with an interim hearing scheduled to determine if he will take a plea deal before the jury is called.

Caden Meade, 20, faces charges of felony kidnapping, sexual assault and menacing, along with misdemeanor counts of assault and harassment, court records show. His July 16 arrest came more than a week after the alleged assault at the popular south-side Colorado Springs lake.

Meade allegedly denied the crimes initially, but later opened up to detectives and detailed the assault, previous Gazette reporting states.

The woman was with a friend until she was kidnapped after heading back to her car then raped at knife point in a pickup truck before being let go, investigators from the Colorado Springs Police Department said during a July news conference.

The friend told police they were at the lake for about an hour and had noticed a dark truck pass through the north parking lot about 20 minutes after they arrived, according to Meade’s arrest affidavit.

The woman reportedly went back to her car, and the friend said he heard a “blood-curdling” scream come from where she was parked. He rushed to the parking lot and saw a dark truck leaving the area at a “high rate of speed,” as well as car keys and a jacket lying on the ground, the friend told police.

At Meade’s court appearance in September, his defense team said it would waive Meade’s preliminary hearing to continue plea negotiations, blocking new details from being released.

Monday marked Meade’s third arraignment since that September preliminary hearing. According to attorneys, the reason behind the delays was the large amount of evidence in the case and the time required to review it.

The court tentatively scheduled Meade’s case for a June trial, but set a February hearing to go over plea negotiations reached at that point. Meade’s defense stated that it was unlikely Meade would see trial and anticipated a resolution being reached beforehand.

Meade appeared in custody for Monday’s brief hearing from the El Paso County jail, where he remains on a no-bond hold.
