The holidays have slowed construction traffic on roads in the Pikes Peak region, but work is ramping back up in the new year.

Here are a few project updates and the closures that could affect drivers.

Peterson Road and US 24

Changes are coming to the interchange north of Peterson Space Force Base.

According to the city of Colorado Springs, the “slip” exit lane that cuts diagonally eastbound to southbound at the US 24 and Peterson Road intersection will be permanently closed, starting Monday.

Officials say the closure is part of other safety improvements to the interchange, including multi-modal transport lanes and sidewalks. Drivers will instead need to use the signalized intersection to make a southbound turn. Temporary traffic signals are in place at the north and south intersections of Peterson Road, city officials said.

Adjacent to the Peterson north gate, the reconstruction of the interchange is meant to improve base traffic. In addition to the exit lane closure, drivers can expect to see delays in the southbound lanes of Peterson as crews install water line casings southwest of the intersection. Crews will also be working to install storm drains at the north end of Peterson Road and US 24.

Colorado Springs Utilities will be in the area of Peterson Road, south of US 24, to install electrical lines and fiber optic cables until at least mid-January.

Garden of the Gods Road

Starting Monday, construction will resume on safety improvements to Garden of the Gods Road, city officials said.

The $1.96 million project started in October, installing new traffic signals and changing the configuration of the road to decrease accidents. The project is funded through the Colorado Department of Transportation.

The latest phase of the project will see closures to the eastbound lanes near Northpark Drive and Mark Dabling Boulevard. Construction is expected to end in late January.

Galley Road Bridge

The reopening of the Galley Road Bridge has been delayed to spring 2026 due to unforeseen construction needs.

According to the city of Colorado Springs, replacing the bridge on the east side of the city required replacing “sensitive” fiber optic cables, a process that took months longer than originally anticipated.

Due to the bridge closure, Galley Road will remain closed between East San Miguel and Moffat Street. Drivers can still access the ENT Credit Union from the west, while access to nearby homes and businesses is also clear. The city asks that people not walk or drive in the construction site.

“We certainly are sympathetic to travelers impacted by the Galley Road bridge replacement project,” said Richard Mulledy, Colorado Springs public works director, in a statement. “This project hasn’t gone as smoothly as we’d have liked due to factors outside our control.”

When finished, the new, wider bridge will be able to better handle high-water events from West Fork Sand Creek. The new bridge will also have sidewalks and a center turn lane.

Motorcycle lanes

Motorcyclists will now have a smoother time entering and exiting two parking garages operated by El Paso County. Opened Dec. 23, the Sahwatch and Costilla Parking Garages now have dedicated motorcycle lanes at the entry and exit points.

The county says the change addresses “longstanding safety issues with traditional gate detection systems.”

Motorcyclists are able to enter and exit without the need to scan a ticket, at no cost. The lanes are open 24/7 and separate motorcycles from other vehicles.
