At least one person was left homeless overnight as three fires burned throughout Colorado Springs on New Year’s Day.

Two of the Thursday fires escalated to second alarms, according to the Colorado Springs Fire Department. No injuries were reported for any of them. The cause for all three are under investigation.

900 block of Darby Street

The home fire was sparked in the 900 block of Darby Street just after 11:30 p.m. Thursday, the Fire Department said on their social media page. Heavy flames were coming from the single-family residence, requiring first responders to request for backup.

After over an hour, the Fire Department reported that the fire was knocked down and confined to the home, which they said suffered “extensive” damage. The resident was displaced.

2200 block of Platte Place

At around 10:50 p.m., a citizen rushed to Colorado Springs police patrol officers and informed them of a structure fire burning in the 2200 block of Platte Place, police reported in an online blotter entry.

Officers found the fire, which was rapidly spreading across the bottom floor of an abandoned building. As the Fire Department initially responded, they realized they needed backup and sounded a second alarm.

The fire was knocked down soon after.

2200 East Bijou Street

An apartment fire was reported by the Fire Department at around 1 p.m. Thursday.

Residents were safely evacuated, and the fire was contained to one unit and reportedly knocked down after a little over 30 minutes. The Fire Department said it is still unknown if anyone will be displaced.

The Fire Department sent out a few safety reminders following the fires:

• Make sure you have working smoke alarms on every level of your home
• Install alarms inside and outside every sleeping area
• Test them regularly
