First baby of Colorado Springs squeaks in eight minutes ahead of second baby

Unbeknownst to her, a tiny baby was in a neck-and-neck race to become the first new human of the year in the Pikes Peak region.
And she did it by eight whole minutes.
Colorado Springs natives Alexis Valdez-Trujillo and Daniel Garcia welcomed their first child at 1:02 a.m. New Year’s Day at CommonSpirit St. Francis Hospital. She weighed six pounds and 12 ounces.
Yet to be named, her parents are weighing their options.
“We’re in between two names right now,” Garcia said. “It’s a little debate. We’ll just play it by ear and see what fits her best.”
Across town at UCHealth Memorial Hospital Central, Carina and Corbin Bultez of Colorado Springs also welcomed their first child, a baby girl weighing 7 pounds and 7 ounces, at 1:10 a.m. on New Year’s Day. The girl has a name, but her parents weren’t ready to share it.
“We found a nickname first,” said Corbin. “We fell in love with it. We found the longer name later and took a liking to it.”
Valdez-Trujillo and Garcia weren’t expecting their progeny for another week, and were hanging out at home on a quiet New Year’s Eve when the inevitable happened. And quickly. After arriving at the hospital around 8:30 p.m., the baby arrived four and a half hours later.
“It was the best way we could start the year, and we’re grateful she arrived healthy and safe,” Garcia said.
Baby Bultez decided to arrive on a holiday, giving her something in common with her mom and several members of her father’s family. Carina was born on Christmas and Corbin’s relatives were born on Halloween and Thanksgiving and Memorial Day when the year cooperates with the birthday.
“She’s very excited to go home and meet her two golden retriever brothers and go on adventures with them,” Corbin said.
