Nikola Jokic to miss at least four weeks with knee injury, Nuggets say
The Nuggets are thrilled it wasn’t worse.
The Nuggets said Tuesday that Nikola Jokic sustained a left knee hyperextension injury during Monday’s 147-123 loss at Miami. The three-time MVP will be reevaluated in four weeks, the team said.
Jokic’s injury occurred when a teammate inadvertently stepped on his left foot in the final seconds of the second quarter. Jokic fell to the hardwood grabbing his left knee, igniting fear the injury might be more serious.
It turned out to be a similar injury to the one Cam Johnson suffered in his right knee last week in Dallas when he landed awkwardly after going up for a rebound. Johnson was going to be reevaluated in four to six weeks, a slightly longer timetable than what was given for Jokic.
Jokic played in Denver’s first 32 games. Missing one month would cover at least 17 missed games and would put his Most Valuable Player candidacy in jeopardy. Players are required to appear in 65 of 82 regular-season games to be eligible for the NBA’s major awards.
After missing the second half of Monday’s game, Jokic is averaging 29.6 points, 12.2 rebounds and 11 assists. The points match the best average of his career, while the assists are on pace to be a career high for the 30-year-old.
Denver could be without four regular starters — Jokic, Johnson, Aaron Gordon and Christian Braun — for Wednesday’s 5:30 p.m. tipoff at Toronto. The Nuggets take a 22-10 record, good for third in the Western Conference, into the New Year’s Eve game against the Raptors.
“Immediately he knew something was wrong. This is part of the NBA. Anybody that gets hurt in this game, it’s kind of gut wrenching, especially somebody as special as he is,” Nuggets coach David Adelman said after Monday’s game. “We’ll move on as a team. Obviously, right now, I’m more concerned just about him as a person. The disappointment of going through something like that, it’s unfortunate, hoping for the best — just like we did for Cam and the other starters that we’ve lost.
“You just have to stay with it as a team and as a group. Honestly, you have to stay with it as a team and as a group, because that’s how you best support your teammates that are out by honoring them when you play.”
