The man convicted of first-degree murder stemming from a June 2024 homicide in Pueblo was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Monday.

David Martinez, 63, was found guilty of one count of first-degree murder and another count of attempted murder on Oct. 9 following a two-week jury trial in Pueblo district court, court records show.

The case started on June 28, 2024, when officers from the Pueblo Police Department responded to a report of a shooting at Veteran’s Tavern, located on Northern Avenue. Upon their arrival, law enforcement said they found two injured women.

Gazette news partner KOAA reported that 65-year-old Elaine Masias of Pueblo died as a result of gunshot wounds. Martinez was arrested as a suspect in the case on Aug. 8, 2024, according to Pueblo police.

Martinez appeared in court for his sentencing on Monday and received life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder charge and another 48 years behind bars for the attempted murder charge. The sentences will run consecutively, or one after the other.

“This verdict and sentence reflect our unwavering commitment to justice. The actions of David Martinez were deliberate and devastating, and today’s outcome ensures accountability,” stated 10th Judicial District Attorney Kala Beauvais in a news release.
