Pikes Peak region girls’ wrestlers start season with stellar performances
One month down and less than eight weeks to go for the girls’ wrestling season.
Several area athletes have already made statements during their December competition and various standouts have emerged from the pack.
Here are a few notes from the season so far.
5A’s 110-pound class loaded with Pikes Peak region competitors
Of the 15 ranked athletes in 5A’s 110-pound class, six reside in the Pikes Peak region and three of the top four wrestle locally.
Falcon’s Allison McDaniel stands atop that mountain with the No. 1 slot and owns a 15-1 record. McDaniel didn’t allow a single point at the Warrior Classic Girls 2025 tournament on Dec. 20 and outscored her opponents 39-0 in four victories.
McDaniel’s lone loss came Dec. 5 in the Ice Queen finals to Pine Creek’s Gia Gabel, who is second at 110. Gabel earned a 1-0 decision to take the 110-pound crown at the Eagles’ home and inaugural tournament.
Gabel has a 13-3 record and finished fourth at the 2025 KC Stampede on Dec. 18. One of her three losses this season occurred in a rubber match with McDaniel at the Eaglecrest Girls’ Invite finals, where the Falcon freshman earned a 9-1 major decision.
Lewis-Palmer’s Sarah Brown is 10-2 and ranks fourth at 110. The Rangers junior placed second at the Gladiatrix and finished 4-1.
The loss came in a 3-0 decision to Cañon City’s Piper Montoya, who owns 4A’s No.1 spot at 110.
Discovery Canyon’s Presley Pulido (seventh), Palmer’s Taytum Soppe-Cope (eighth) and Coronado’s Naomi White (12th) all hold spots in the top 15.
Sand Creek freshman Peggy Susan Dean begins preps career undefeated
It doesn’t matter the opponent nor location, Dean always reigns supreme. Dean has a 15-0 record and ranks No. 2 in 5A at 100 pounds behind Pomona’s Justice Gutierrez.
Dean is the lone 5A area girls’ wrestler who owns an undefeated record. Cañon City’s Piper Montoya (4A, 110 pounds) is 11-0 and teammate Kate Doughty (4A, 135 pounds) is 7-0.
Through her 15 listed matches, Dean has outscored her opponents 58-6. Four of those points came in the Northern Colorado Christmas Tournament (NCCT) finals against McLoud (Okla.) sophomore Remy Whitney in a 9-4 decision.
Prior to the NCCT, Dean allowed just one point at the Western Slope Showdown and the season opening Ice Queen tournament, which Dean closed with a 16-1 tech fall against Lewis-Palmer’s Lilly Lundy in the finals.
Coronado’s Bella Arellano-Gandy hungry for more in her junior year
Arellano-Gandy won seven of eight matches prior to break and has a 12-2 record to start the year.
The Cougars 125-pounder ranks second in her weight class and her lone defeat in her past eight matches came in a 5-0 decision to Vista Peak’s Amelia Bacon, who’s No.1 at 125.
At the Columbine Girls’ Invitational, Arellano-Gandy allowed just one point – which came in a 6-1 decision win against Ponderosa’s Keira Johnson in the opener – and scored 19 to win the tournament’s crown.
As a sophomore, Arellano-Gandy finished 33-11 and lost a 5-2 decision in the third-fourth place match at state last season to Discovery Canyon’s Presley Pulido. This year, Arellano-Gandy has lost just once to an in-state opponent and has ceded 15 points in those contests.
Honorable mention: Widefield’s Amaya Hinojosa remains focused in senior season
Hinojosa’s second loss came at the Northern Colorado Christmas Tournament in a 4-0 decision to Brighton’s No. 3-ranked 120-pounder Kiahna Spellman.
The Gladiators’ 120-pound No. 4-ranked competitor didn’t drop her second match until the state finals last season and, for her career, has just five losses. Hinojosa has never lost more than two matches in a season.
Good luck to the field as Hinojosa pursues a state title in her final prep season. Hinojosa is 16-2 and the Gladiators senior earned tournament titles at the inaugural Ice Queen on Dec. 5 and followed with the crown at Widefield’s Gladiatrix Invitational on Dec. 13.
Through three seasons of competition – she missed her sophomore year due to injury – Hinojosa has never lost consecutive high school matches.
