Planet Fitness officially opened its seventh location in the greater Colorado Springs area on Dec. 13, a new 20,000-square-foot fitness center on the city’s west side.

The new location at 3143 W. Colorado Ave. replaces a former Walgreens that operated there for nearly 20 years. It is run by franchise group Baseline Fitness, which operates more than 120 Planet Fitness locations across the U.S.

“… We are excited to welcome the community in to grow stronger together at this new location,” Will Delaney, marketing director at Baseline Fitness, said in part in a news release announcing the club’s grand opening.

Planet Fitness was founded in 1992 in Dover, N.H. With nearly 21 million members and 2,795 locations in all 50 states, it is one of the largest and fastest-growing franchisors and operators of fitness centers in the U.S., the news release said.

Walgreens began closing locations around town in 2024 amid the company’s ongoing financial woes. The pharmacy chain announced in October 2024 it planned to close about 1,200 locations; in August, a private equity firm purchased Walgreens and split it into five companies.
