A total of 30 flights were diverted to the Colorado Springs Airport Friday as 85-105 mph wind gusts ravaged the Denver area, officials said.

Denver International Airport was put under a ground stop until 10 a.m. Friday due to the high-speed winds, leaving nearly 90,000 Coloradans without power.

More than 1,000 flights at DIA had been delayed as of 2 p.m., and 42 had been canceled, according to flightaware.com. In Colorado Springs, the city reported late in the morning that all of the departures to and arrivals from Denver have been delayed. Some flights to Denver have been canceled since.

Colorado Springs Airport spokeswoman Amanda Rantis said the 30 flight diversions were the highest number so far this year. A Gazette reporter saw planes stacked along the airport’s runway earlier Friday morning.

According to Rantis, their scheduled flights aside from the ones to and out of Denver continued to operate “business as usual” following the delays.

Rantis said early Christmas festivities still happened at the airport, with Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade showing up alongside Santa and Mrs. Claus to great travelers with hot chocolate and holiday cheer.
