Alamosa police arrested a Colorado Springs man they say threatened an officer with a knife while responding to a domestic violence incident on Monday, according to a news release by the city of Alamosa.

The suspect, 43-year-old Joseph Tafoya, remains hospitalized for treatment of gunshot wounds and will be taken into custody by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation upon his release.

Tafoya allegedly committed a domestic assault before leaving the residence prior to police arriving, the release stated. Officers found him in an open field armed with a knife, and police unsuccessfully tried to de-escalate the situation.

Tafoya charged at officers with the knife after a Taser struck him ineffectively, according to the release. Officer Mollee Heeney then fired and struck Tafoya twice with her service weapon.

The officer was placed on administrative leave pending the conclusion of the investigation by CBI and the use of force determination by the 12th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, the release stated.

Tafoya was charged with:

• two counts of attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer
• two counts of first-degree assault
• two counts of menacing
• second-degree assault of domestic violence
• third-degree assault of domestic violence
• domestic violence
• child abuse

No officers were injured in the incident, and the investigation remains ongoing.
