On the docket this week: Hallfords, double homicide suspect back in court

Last week in 4th Judicial District courtrooms, the suspect in the summer Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway attack pleaded not guilty to the offense, and the Walgreens thief injured after being shot by Fountain police in 2024 was sentenced to probation.

While this week starts off slow, proceedings pick up in the later half of the week. Notably, the Return to Nature Funeral Home owners are back in state court for a review Thursday.

Here is the rundown.

Wednesday

Ruben Sandoval, 20, is back in court Wednesday for a plea hearing. Sandoval is facing eight counts of first-degree attempted murder stemming from an April 8 incident where he allegedly shot at a home in the 2100 block of East Willamette Avenue. There were eight people in the house at the time, including a baby, according to investigators.

Police allege the drive-by shooting followed an internet “beef” that turned violent, according to court documents.

Also in court Wednesday is Joseph Camacho, for his sentencing hearing.

Camacho, 55, was criminally charged with negligence and child abuse resulting in death after a 6-year-old child drowned at Prospect Lake in Memorial Park.

According to previous reporting from The Gazette, police were called in the afternoon of Sept. 30, 2023, when a woman who had been windsurfing at the park noticed a young boy who was “floating face down” in the lake.

Police reported within the arresting documents that the 6-year-old boy was related to Camacho, but did not specify their relationship.

Thursday

The 18-year-old charged with first-degree murder last year is set to appear in court to enter a plea Thursday.

Mykael Weathington, now 19, was arrested Dec. 6, 2024, for allegedly shooting and killing a 17-year-old boy near the 1900 block of South Chelton Road on Nov. 26, 2024.

An arrest affidavit for Weathington obtained by The Gazette describes how police believe an argument about clothing between the two led to Weathington shooting and killing the teenager, who was initially reported to be unarmed. Later testimony and evidence revealed the possibility that the victim also had a weapon.

The Return to Nature Funeral Home owners Carie Hallford and Jon Hallford are back in state court for a review after setting their cases for trial earlier this year.

The pair came under state and federal investigation in October 2023 after reports of a “foul odor” led to a search warrant on the Penrose property, unveiling nearly 190 decomposing bodies that had not been cremated or buried.

Appearances are not mandatory for the Hallfords, and little new information is expected to be released at the hearing.

Friday

The woman facing charges related to a crime spree involving the murders of two men, one in Colorado Springs and one in Park County, is back in court to enter pleas Friday.

Johnny Morris and Hailey Cole face homicide charges in the bludgeoning deaths of Stephen Walker, 37, and Timmy Huston, 65, in December 2024. The murders prompted a multi-agency investigation that spanned more than a week across two counties.

While Morris’ next appearance is not scheduled until later in the month, Cole appears Friday for her arraignment, during which she is expected to either set her case for trial, or enter into a plea agreement.

Stay with The Gazette this week for updates on these cases and others.
