It’s an icy Thursday morning in Colorado Springs, and slick roads from Wednesday’s storm have prompted several school districts to close or delay classes.

A Wednesday snowstorm hit southeast Colorado, piling 5 to 6.5 inches of snow across Colorado Springs. The snow froze overnight and created icy road conditions, and a blanket of freezing fog covered pockets of El Paso County earlier this morning, according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo.

According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, every major roadway in Colorado Springs is icy, snow packed and slushy.

Meteorologists expect temperatures will warm to around 38 degrees Thursday. The Weather Service reported it will gradually become sunnier as the day continues.

“Black ice is likely to linger longest over bridges and overpasses, and you should expect travel issues on those surfaces into the afternoon,” said Meteorologist Alan Rose of Gazette news partner KOAA.

The highest reported snowfall totals in southeast Colorado were in Rye and Colorado City, both with 10 inches. According to the Weather Service, Pueblo broke its daily snowfall record from 2005, topping the previous 3.2 inches to 5.8 inches.
