A busy Thanksgiving weekend with extended family became busier for motorists along Interstate 70 on Sunday after two crashes caused massive pile-ups along Colorado’s primary east-west thoroughfare.

No injuries have been reported in both crashes, according to a Colorado State Patrol news release.

Snowfall across western portions of the I-70 corridor has caused low visibility and icy conditions. The series of crashes came during the busy Thanksgiving travel weekend.

At 11:28 a.m., CSP first responded to a pile-up crash involving around 30 vehicles near milepost 119 in Garfield County, west of Glenwood Springs. Moments later, at 11:42 a.m., troopers responded to another pile-up crash of about 20 vehicles at milepost 130 in Eagle County west of Gypsum.

Both crashes only resulted in damage of vehicles, according to CSP.

I-70 eastbound between Glenwood Springs and Dotsero was closed for several hours, but reopened Sunday afternoon. Westbound lanes were closed briefly at Dotsero but reopened around 1:45 p.m.

“Once the road is suitable for travel, emergency vehicles will begin leading vehicles through the area at slow speeds,” CSP said in a statement.

Both pile-ups were only property damage crashes, no injuries were reported.
