Family man Nick Hoff to headline ‘All Clean Comedy Weekend’ in Colorado Springs
By O’Dell Isaac
Nick Hoff remembers being fascinated with the television show “Seinfeld,” in which comedian Jerry Seinfeld plays a fictionalized version of himself.
“I was just a kid then,” Hoff said. “I was very interested in the idea that a person could do stand-up comedy as a job. I thought, ‘If that’s something people can do for a living, then I want to do that.’”
After graduating from Indiana University with a business degree, Hoff moved to California in 2005 to give stand-up a try, and he hasn’t looked back. He has performed in Netflix’s Comedy Festival, opened for Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy on their “We’ve Been Thinking” tour, and played venues, large and small, all over the country.
On Friday and Saturday, the Los Angeles-based comic will headline the “All Clean Comedy Weekend” at Loonees Comedy Corner. It will be Hoff’s fifth appearance at Loonees, his third as the headliner.
“I love Loonees,” Hoff said. “It’s a fun place, and they know how to put on a show.”
Hoff’s career has included multiple shows in the Centennial State. In addition to Loonees, he has played venues in Denver, Fort Collins and the Vail Valley. He also performed at the Broadmoor World Arena during the “We’ve Been Thinking” tour.
“I’ve had some great experiences in Colorado,” said Hoff, a married father of three.
Like many comedians, Hoff’s career has featured soaring highs and subterranean lows, he said.
“It’s rough, early on, especially because you’re developing your style and learning what works, and what doesn’t,” he said. “So you take your lumps, and you drive 700 miles to make 30 bucks, and you learn from the tough shows. This profession has a high ceiling, but also a very low floor, and I’ve slept on that floor many times.”
Life on the road can be hard, especially for a family man. But Hoff said he has no regrets.
“A lot of people like a stationary job, where they know exactly when their paycheck is coming and how much it will be, every time,” he said. “For someone like me, that would be nerve-wracking.
“There’s a level of insanity that you have to have to pursue something like this. If you knew in advance what the path looked like, you might turn away from it. But I can’t imagine doing anything else.”
Hoff, who co-hosts a weekly show on SiriusXM, said the Loonees show will be ideal for people who enjoy a cleaner form of comedy.
“I would encourage people who like clean comedy to come check us out,” he said. “It’s going to be a blast.”
