Shawn Brotherton faces a first-degree murder charge after a stabbing death last week at a Pueblo West residence, according to a news release Tuesday from the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office.

Brotherton’s arrest comes after the fatal stabbing of Scott Valencia, 46, on the night of Nov. 18 in the 300 block of East Stewart Drive. Valencia was driven to the hospital by a private vehicle and later pronounced deceased, the release stated.

Witnesses recounted to deputies that an argument between Brotherton, 38, and Valencia allegedly escalated to a physical altercation resulting in the stabbing, according to the release.

Brotherton wasn’t located that night and claimed self-defense to detectives when they arrested him Nov. 19 on three other outstanding warrants.

An arrest warrant in connection with the Pueblo West death was obtained Monday while Brotherton was in custody.

Brotherton is being held on a $1 million cash bond in Pueblo County jail.
