After basking in a warm, dry fall, Colorado Springs residents can expect some rain Sunday ahead of a mild Thanksgiving week. 

A weather system is expected to move in Sunday and bring a quarter inch of rain mostly in the afternoon and evening, said Kathy Torgerson, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Pueblo. That system would build on the first rain of the month the area received on Thursday. The storm brought .06 of an inch of precipitation, the agency reported. 

Slightly colder weather could set in on Tuesday when the high is expected to reach the low 40s. But then warmer temperatures are expected to move in and Thanksgiving Day is expected to reach a high in the 50s, she said. 

The warm, dry trend has sent the area dipping into abnormally dry conditions that set in the first week of November, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. Most of the county is considered abnormally dry, the first tier of five on the monitor. 

The moderate weather is a stark contrast to last year when much of the state was walloped with a snowstorm that brought 24 inches to Colorado Springs from Nov. 5 through Nov. 9. 

This season, the city is still waiting for the first snowflakes to fall. 

If flakes fell before Nov. 25 it would be the 12th latest snowfall on record, Torgerson said. 

It’s possible a storm could move over the last weekend of the month, but it’s too soon to predict with much certainty, she said. 

For hardcore skiers and snowboarders eager for the season to start, there is not much powder to chase just yet, although many resorts aim to open around Thanksgiving. 

The ski resorts that have opened so far  include Keystone, Breckenridge, Winter Park, Arapahoe, Copper Mountain, Eldora Mountain Resort, Loveland Ski Area and Vail. But none are reporting more than a 20-inch base. Early in the season, the resorts typically have limited terrain opened to skiers and snowboarders.
