Cascade Library celebrates milestone

The Ute Pass Library in Cascade celebrated a milestone last week as the branch officially joined the Pikes Peak Library District.

Friends and patrons gathered to honor the transition and chat with their neighbors during the reception.

“We are excited to have this library as a permanent fixture in Cascade,” said Julie Smyth, president of PPLD Board of Trustees.

In August, the board voted to purchase the branch after several years of leasing the building from the Cascade Fire Protection District, whose station is a few feet over from the library.

“We want to thank Mike Whittemore and the Cascade Fire Department for their partnership over the years,” said Smyth, referring to the former chief and current president of the department’s board.  “The purchase gives us more flexibility to expand services and to make sure we are meeting your needs.”

The acquisition, said Heather Laslie, chief operations officer, gives the patrons sustainable access to the library.

Laslie acknowledged the library’s pivotal location in a rural area of Ute Pass that is accessible during challenging weather conditions.

From 28 hours of weekly service, the board envisions expanding the hours to 112.  “In a couple of months, we’ll have town hall meetings to discuss expanded access programs,” Laslie said.

The district purchased the library branch from the fire district for $400,000, Smyth said. After the ceremonial speeches, the people gathered in the children’s section for cake and beverages. “I am so grateful to this community, especially for the children’s programs,” Smyth said. “It’s so heartwarming.”

In 2023, DeeAnn Brown, who volunteers at the library, received the Volunteer of the Year award from Friends of the Pikes Peak Library District. Brown, who lives in Chipita Park, is a member of Ute Pass Friends of the Library.

The cozy library, with a fireplace and lounge areas, is obviously a community gathering place, one well-acquainted with Taryn Malila and Karin Swengel, the library manager and supervisor, respectively.
