Broncos kicker Wil Lutz named AFC special teams player of the week

Broncos kicker Wil Lutz is getting recognition for his clutch performance against the Chiefs.

Lutz was named AFC special teams player of the week, the league announced Wednesday, after he tied a career-high five field goals made on five attempts in a 22-19 win over Kansas City. Lutz converted his 13th career game-winning field goal, a 35-yard kick, as the clock ran out at Empower Field.

It gave Lutz redemption after his 35-yard attempt last season against Kansas City was blocked in Week 10, and the Broncos lost in heartbreaking fashion.

“When you’re part of a loss like that, you don’t just forget about it,” Lutz reflected on Sunday night after beating the Chiefs. “When I looked down and saw that we were on the line again, making a 35-yard field goal, I was kind of like, shoot, here we are.

“I’ve been waiting for a game like that. We haven’t kicked a ton of field goals this year, which is not always a bad thing. It’s hard to get in a rhythm because we kick one or two field goals a game. I’ve been waiting for a game like that. It was nice to play a big part in it.”

Lutz made 17 of 20 field goals entering the bye week and converted all 24 of his extra-point attempts. He is the third Broncos player to earn AFC player of the week recognition this season, joining outside linebacker Nik Bonitto (Week 5) and outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper (Week 6).

The Broncos (9-2) sit atop the AFC West, and following their bye week, play at the Washington Commanders on Nov. 30.
