Engine power loss forced plane from Colorado Springs to crash, preliminary report shows
A plane that took off from Colorado Springs and crashed in Castle Rock before its planned return on Nov. 10 suffered from engine power loss, according to the preliminary report from the National Safety and Transportation Board.
The single-engine Piper PA 28-235, built in 1966, experienced a decrease in engine speed in cruise flight, which the pilot attempted to correct by applying carburetor heat. About two minutes later, the engine lost power and the pilot was unsuccessful in his attempts to restore it, the report stated.
The plane’s left wing struck a car during its forced landing upon Prairie Hawk Drive near the intersection of Wolfsenberger Road in Castle Rock. One of two passengers in the plane reported minor injuries and no one in the car was injured.
The NTSB will conduct an engine examination once it is recovered.
The plane’s owner, a Manitou Springs resident, was issued a certificate for the plane in September, and its registration is listed as individual, according to the Federal Aviation Administration’s registry.
The engine is a Lycoming 0-540 Series with an airworthiness date of Oct. 22, 1966. The information under the airworthiness section should not be used to determine the airworthiness of an aircraft, according to the registry.
The planned route on Nov. 10 to and from the Colorado Springs Municipal Airport appeared to have been completed on Nov. 3 in its penultimate flight, according to flight logs.
