50 displaced from overnight apartment fire in east Colorado Springs

A fire at an apartment complex in Colorado Springs displaced around 50 residents early Sunday morning, leaving two in critical condition, according to fire officials.

A total of 21 engines from the Colorado Springs Fire Department were dispatched to a two-alarm structure fire around 1:30 a.m. at The Montecito Apartments on North Murray Boulevard, according to the department. When firefighters arrived on scene, they found a heavy fire coming from a second-story unit.

By the time the first engine arrived, one victim had been pulled out of the building and was in critical condition, the department said. Firefighters quickly located a second victim who was unconscious and also in critical condition.

Fire officials rescued an additional four people, including two young children, by ladders before the fire was deemed under control by 2:15 a.m.

Five people were treated for smoke inhalation and released on scene, and the two victims in critical condition were taken to a hospital.

The Red Cross is assisting the approximately 50 residents who were displaced due to smoke damage throughout the building, according to the department.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
