Last week, an El Paso County judge handed down a 45-year prison sentence for the suspect in the 2021 Yoder ranch hand killing and another ruled to reject the state plea agreement for Carie Hallford.

More hearings are in store for this week. Here is the rundown.

Monday

Emmanuel Cooley, the suspect in a deadly May shopping center shooting who was allegedly defending his brother, is set for an arraignment Monday.

Cooley, 50, is accused of killing Bryan Parada, 38, in the parking lot of the Park Hill Shopping Center on East Pikes Peak Avenue on May 16.

Cooley faces one count of murder in the first-degree, one count of felony menacing and another charge involving illegal weapon possession. He is expected to enter a plea during his hearing.

Wednesday

Cameron Walsh, accused of killing 28-year-old Jeremy Ives in a Sept. 5 hit-and-run crash, is also back in court for an arraignment.

Authorities arrested Walsh, 59, shortly after the crash, which occurred at about 10:37 p.m. next to Old Colorado City near Highway 24 and 26th Street. Ives, a pedestrian, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Walsh’s charges include vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, fleeing the scene of a crash and careless driving.

Thursday

Robert Dear, the alleged gunman in the 2015 Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood shooting that took the lives of three people, is set for a status conference on his state case Thursday.

Dear, 67, was diagnosed with a delusional disorder shortly after his arrest in 2015, which left his federal and state cases in limbo for years. At that time, a judge in the 4th Judicial District said Dear’s understanding of things was “not rational” or “grounded in reality,” according to prior Gazette coverage of the case.

At his most recent federal hearing in September, a judge ruled that Dear remains incompetent to proceed to trial and is likely unrestorable despite being medicated.

Also in court Thursday is 34-year-old Christian Ortega, accused of hitting a 74-year-old jogger with his SUV in May and telling police that he “woke up and smoked weed and just felt like killing someone.”

Eyewitnesses told police that they saw the vehicle swerve directly into the jogger. Afterward, the driver stayed on the scene, laughing and smoking marijuana, police said.

Court documents state that Ortega admitted to officers that he had hit the jogger. Additionally, Ortega said he had smoked marijuana before and after the collision, and that “I was actually trying to hit him.”

Ortega is expected to enter a plea.
