A pursuit that ended in Pueblo West led to a shooting involving the Monument Police Department on Tuesday, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

According to State Patrol, its aircraft unit received information around 3:45 p.m. about a stolen vehicle traveling on I-25 through El Paso County.

State Patrol says the vehicle was spotted 3 minutes later traveling south on I-25 through Colorado Springs.

Troopers, the Monument Police Department and the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office were involved in the pursuit. The vehicle exited Purcell Boulevard and turned down Fairbanks Drive.

The preliminary investigation from the Sheriff’s Office shows that the driver fired several shots out of the window of the truck as troopers continued to follow him, according to a Wednesday news release from the office.

State Patrol says the vehicle then went off the road into the prairie along Fairbanks Drive around 4:25 p.m. Shots were fired, and one Monument police officer fired back.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the unidentified suspect was given orders to get out of the vehicle. When the suspect didn’t exit the vehicle, the Sheriff’s Office says they gave them medical attention.

The suspect, who was the only person in the vehicle, was taken to a Colorado Springs hospital by Flight for Life in an unknown condition. No law enforcement officers were injured. A weapon was recovered from the vehicle.

The Sheriff’s Office identified the man as 25-year-old Michael Trujillo in the Wednesday news release.

He is suspected of stealing a truck from a Monument shopping center that escalated into the shooting and police chase, the news release states.

The 10th Judicial Critical Incident Team has taken control over the investigation and will look in to the shooting to see if officers lawfully fired their weapons.
