A man who died in the hospital after being stabbed several times at a Colorado Springs home on Halloween night has been identified by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office.

Raymundo Medina-Cabrera, 31, was one of three people injured in a bloody stabbing at a home in the 1400 block of North El Paso Street. Colorado Springs Police Department officers arrived just before midnight and found Medina-Cabrera and two women with life-threatening injuries.

Medina-Cabrera died from his wound at the hospital. The other two remain hospitalized.

His death was the 29th homicide in Colorado Springs this year, the Police Department said.

Police arrested 33-year-old Matthew Regnier in connection to the stabbing. Officers found him on scene bloodied, holding a 2-year-old child. The child wasn’t injured.

Regnier, a now-former Monument Academy teacher, claimed that the stabbing was in self-defense, but a detective noted in his arrest affidavit that physical evidence obtained at the scene does not support the claim.

Regnier faces charges of first-degree murder, two counts of criminal attempt of murder, three counts of first-degree assault and child abuse. He appeared in custody in court on Monday to waive an advisement hearing and will have his formal first appearance Nov. 10.

The stabbing happened in the Patty Jewett neighborhood, which is part of a nonprofit association started in 1999 in relation to the nearby Patty Jewett Golf Course.

The neighborhood association is an all-volunteer organization that welcomes all residents to join in an effort to build community and enhance the neighborhood, according to its website.

Resident Lisa Blanot said the stabbing is the first major incident that’s happened in the neighborhood in recent years. Living in her home for around 30 years, Blanot said other incidents that have happened weren’t nearly to the “same degree,” either.

Blanot and other neighbors said the area typically stays quiet and peaceful aside from the regular cars that pass through the busy road of El Paso Street. The morning after Halloween, she said she saw police officers and yellow tape outside her window.

“We don’t have a ton of that (crime) around, so, as soon as we saw that yellow tape, I knew that something was going on,” she said.

From Nov. 6 2024, to Nov. 6, 2025, there have been around 30 calls for service that were categorized as “violent” in the area, according to database website My Neighborhood Update.

The database reference doesn’t necessarily mean a crime happened because some calls for service turn out to be nothing or something else.

Police Department spokeswoman Caitlin Ford said in an email that violent crime happens “in all parts” of the city and isn’t necessarily “concentrated” to one area or another.
