Six people were injured Tuesday when a vehicle crashed into a King Soopers grocery store off Uintah Street, according to the Colorado Springs Fire Department.

Around 4:30 p.m., the department posted on social media stating crew were responding to the crash, located near 19th Street and Uintah on the city’s west side.

Officials said six individuals had been taken to a local hospital with minor injuries in an update posted on social media at 6 p.m.

Colorado Springs police said the involved vehicle entered the King Soopers parking lot of Uintah Street, made a right turn, and then drove east toward the building.

“The vehicle accelerated to a high rate of speed and drove through a wall of the building,” police said in an online blotter entry.

Based on social media photos, the vehicle appeared to be a Rivian SUV that plowed through the King Soopers before coming to a stop in the checkout lanes inside the store.

Heavy Rescue crews were working Tuesday night to stabilize the building, according to the post. Hazmat crews are also on the scene to ensure the vehicle doesn’t go into “thermal runaway” — conditions in an electric vehicle that could cause it to catch fire or explode — while it gets towed from the store.

Officials asked residents to avoid the area with fire and police crews likely on scene for several hours.

King Soopers released the following statement to KOAA regarding the incident:

“We are saddened to hear of the unfortunate incident that occurred at our store located at 1750 W. Uintah St. We are cooperating with local authorities as they investigate the incident. The safety and well-being of our customers and associates remain our top priority and will continue to guide all our decisions. At this time the store is currently closed.”

Police said the driver was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

“The driver of the vehicle was fully cooperative with officers, and our investigation indicates there was no criminal intent and this was an accident,” the online blotter stated.
