A man suspected of stabbing three people — one of them fatally — in Colorado Springs on Friday had been a teacher at Monument Academy, according to a letter from school administration.

Matthew Regnier, 33, is being held without bail at the El Paso County jail, court records show.

Colorado Springs police arrested Regnier on Saturday in connection with a stabbing at a residence in the 1400 block of North El Paso Street that left one person dead and two others seriously injured on Friday. A child, who was in the home at the time of the attack, was reportedly uninjured.

“Under State and Federal law, Mr. Regnier is innocent until proven guilty,” the letter stated.

Regnier had been a secondary campus art teacher at Monument Academy since August 2023, according to the letter. He also coached the junior varsity soccer team at Palmer Ridge High School, according to Lewis-Palmer School District 38.

On Friday, officers responded to an 11:50 p.m. call about a disturbance at a residence in the 1400 block of North El Paso Street, police said. When they arrived at the home, they found a man and two women suffering from stab wounds. They were taken to a nearby hospital, where the male victim succumbed to his injuries. Both women sustained life-threatening injuries, according to police.

A second man and a child were also found at the residence. The man was treated for minor injuries. The child was not injured.

Monument Academy officials said the school will offer mental health counseling for students and staff members who need it.
