Pints, puddings and plaid: New pub serves up British charm in downtown Colorado Springs | Table Talk

Hankering for some British eats in Colorado Springs?

Steve Jones, founder of The Brit Food Group, formerly The British Food Group, has you covered.

Jones and a few fellow British expats — along with some American fans of all things UK — have opened The Brit Pub, located on the ground level of The Experience at Epicenter apartment complex, 645 S. Sierra Madre Ave.

While Colorado Springs already boasts a few Irish spots, The Brit Pub promises “A real taste of Britain.” That is where co-owner and executive chef Phil Griffin comes in to deliver on that promise.

Griffin, a classically trained chef from the UK, has worked under Michelin-starred masters Raymond Blanc, Eric Chavot and Marco Pierre White. Locally, diners may remember him from The Till, Northside Social, Till Neighborhood Bistro, Wines of Colorado and FO4R North.

His menu covers all the British classics: the Ploughman’s board (think British charcuterie), Scotch eggs, Welsh rarebit, sausage rolls, steak and ale pie, bangers and mash, and cottage pie. Rounding out the menu are soups, salads, burgers, steaks, fish and chicken dishes.

Desserts stay true to UK standards with sticky toffee pudding, treacle tart (a Harry Potter favorite), Bakewell tart, crumble and scones.

A highlight you won’t find at most British-themed eateries in town is the Sunday roast — a traditional UK meal typically enjoyed on Sundays. While roast beef is a given for Sunday roast, Griffin takes it up a notch with other protein options such as leg of lamb, half-roasted chicken, or Duroc pork belly.

The setting completes the British experience with comfy tartan plaid chairs, memorabilia, and a vintage red English phone booth greeting guests at the entrance. Two full bars — one upstairs and one down — plus large-screen TVs make The Brit Pub as inviting for sports fans as it is for Anglophiles. It’s about as close as you will get to crossing the pond without booking a flight.

Hours: 11 a.m.–10 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays; brunch 8–11 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays; open until 6 p.m. on Sundays for late dining. Visit greatbritish.net.

Meatless week

Vegan Restaurant Week returns Nov. 1-9, coinciding with World Vegan Day Nov. 1. It’s a time for Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs restaurants to showcase their diverse and creative vegan cuisine offerings. More than 20 fast-food, casual and fine dining restaurants will be serving up everything from pizza, burgers, pasta, tacos, and ice cream. There’s also a vegan cooking class by Polka Dots & Curry on the list. Visit cosveganrestaurantweek.com for links to restaurants, most of which have their vegan menu listed.

Veterans Day deal

Texas T-Bone Steakhouse & Famous Dave’s BBQ, 5245 N. Academy Blvd., on Nov. 11, will offer a free Georgia chopped pork sandwich with a choice of sides to veterans and active-duty military members. The deal is good for dine-in or to-go.

“This is one of our favorite days of the year, as we get to give back and say thank you to our amazing heroes,” said Ashley Brown, who with her husband, Trystan, own the restaurants.

Hours are 11 a.m.-9 p.m. daily. Details: 719-434-4771, texastbonesteakhouse.com.
