New-format IKEA store opening in Colorado Springs

A smaller, new kind of IKEA store — sans furniture — is opening soon in Colorado Springs.

The international Swedish brand is opening a “plan and order point” at 5102 N. Nevada Ave., Suite 160, at University Village Colorado, a regional shopping center anchored by Costco, Kohl’s and Lowe’s.

These smaller stores are “dedicated to kitchen, bedroom and living room planning,” the company website states. Customers can get home furnishing advice and expertise to help them design their spaces.

Customers can book appointments with experts in-store or use in-store self-service tools to plan and design their projects.

The Colorado Springs location is scheduled to open Nov. 5 at 10 a.m., the company said in a Wednesday news release.

“The IKEA Colorado Springs plan and order point in University Village Colorado represents our commitment to making IKEA more accessible and convenient for local communities,” Laurie Helm said, IKEA’s Centennial market manager. “Residents of Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak region can now explore, plan and order home furnishing solutions closer to home without having to travel to our larger store in Centennial. We’re excited to open our doors this fall and provide a welcoming space where customers can get personalized guidance, discover new ideas and bring IKEA inspiration into their homes.”

IKEA’s plan and order points don’t carry inventory. Digital purchases made at these stores can be home delivered or picked up from an IKEA store or from hundreds of pickup points, the company said.

There are currently 17 plan and order points with pick-up across 10 states.

The new-format stores are part of IKEA’s continued U.S. growth strategy, the company said in a February news release, when it unveiled its fiscal year 2024 annual growth summary.

“It is different from the traditional large-format IKEA stores as it gives customers the opportunity to meet with the IKEA store team to plan and order home furnishing solutions that require a bit more help — such as kitchen, bathroom and closet storage systems. With the addition of the IKEA pick-up point, customers will be able to collect their purchases when and where it’s convenient for them,” the release said.

Colorado has one large-format IKEA store, located in Centennial.

IKEA has turned its focus on small-format stores over the last several years, according to reporting from MediaRetail.co in February 2023. They’re designed to reach shoppers who live in areas outside of where the furniture retailer’s large-format stores are located.

IKEA opened plan and order points with pickup in various cities across the U.S. this year, according to a February news release and the website. By spring 2026, the brand plans to open additional plan and order points in Pennsylvania and Southern California, it announced.

It was unclear if any more locations are planned in Colorado.
