Gazette Preps rewind: Air Academy, Cheyenne Mountain boys soccer battle to stalemate; Palmer, Mitchell football earn first wins
14ners
Saydie Rexroth, Pine Creek, jr., girls volleyball – The start of the Eagles’ six-game winning streak began with an impressive showing from the junior.
Rexroth finished the Eagles’ sweep (25-11, 25-11, 25-16) against Vista Ridge with a season-best 27 assists. It was Rexroth’s third consecutive match with 20 or more assists and her seventh time this season with 20 helpers.
The Eagles’ setter also managed two blocks in the contest and added three aces.
Miranda Campos, The Classical Academy, sr., girls volleyball – A person wouldn’t see this many aces if they spent a weekend at Cripple Creek.
The Titans senior notched a career-high 15 aces in the Titans’ sweep of the Marauders, which brought her then-total to 60.
Campos had eight earlier this season against the Marauders but never eclipsed double-digit aces until the Titans’ second matchup with Mitchell.
Savannah Heath, Pikes Peak Christian, sr., girls volleyball – In back-to-back games, Heath reached 30 assists, but this time, the Eagles setter did so in just three sets.
Pikes Peak Christian beat Cripple Creek-Victor 25-18, 25-5, 25-18, and Heath secured a game-high 32 assists, no errors and six digs.
Heath has three games this season with 30 or more assists and 386 total, which is third in 1A Black Forest League and 15th in 1A.
Jo Govea, Coronado, sr., boys soccer – Govea scored in just two games prior to Coronado’s match with Mesa Ridge. Then Govea had the best match of his preps career.
In the Cougars’ 10-0 victory against Mesa Ridge, Govea struck four times for the first multigoal game of his career. Prior to the onslaught against Mesa Ridge, Govea’s second goal of the year came in a 3-2 victory over Discovery Canyon.
Brooklyn Blair, The Classical Academy, jr., flag football – Everyone on TCA’s defense flustered Mountain View’s offense Saturday. But none more than Blair.
The newly crowned 4A champion Titans forced four interceptions and Blair snagged three in TCA’s 34-0 win against Mountain View.
Blair’s performance at Trailblazer Stadium brought her total to 18 for the season to put her in a two-way tie for first with teammate Jerrica Thompson, who also had an interception.
Saie Soto, Woodland Park, fr., football – Soto’s second game with 100 rushing yards came in dominant fashion for the Panthers.
In a 49-13 victory against Manitou Springs, Soto had 18 carries for a career-best 196 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Soto had just two rushing TDs prior to the Panthers’ game against the Mustangs.
The freshman previously reached 100-plus rushing yards in a 157-yard performance against Colorado Springs Christian on Sept. 12.
Collin Wolf, Coronado, sr., football – After a monthlong dry spell without a receiving touchdown, Wolf was due for a breakthrough. Wolf caught four passes for 128 yards and three touchdowns in the Cougars’ 49-0 win against Sierra on Friday.
Wolf also had his first game over 100 receiving yards since Sept. 12 when the pass catcher had eight receptions for 178 yards and four touchdowns, all career highs, in a 61-54 loss to Cheyenne Mountain. The Cougars senior has 36 receptions for 675 yards and 11 touchdowns in eight games.
Jaxon Meider, Palmer Ridge, jr., football – Meider didn’t require much time on the gridiron to hassle Rampart last week.
In the Bears’ 51-6 win against the Rams, Meider finished with four tackles, three being for losses. Meider also caused and recovered a fumble in the matchup, both his first of the season.
For the year, Meider has seven tackles for loss and ranks 34th in 4A with 3.5 sacks.
Ada Wilson, The Classical Academy, jr., softball – The season didn’t end how the Titans hoped in the 3A state playoffs, but Wilson shined in the circle in TCA’s penultimate game.
In a 4-3 first-round victory against Lamar on Friday, Wilson pitched eight innings, tallied 12 strikeouts and allowed just one earned run.
It was Wilson’s first double-digit strikeout game since a 5-2 loss to Widefield on Sept. 26 and her sixth of the season.
Pam Boyarko, Palmer Ridge, jr., softball – The Bears’ ace never left the circle in Palmer Ridge’s three playoff games last week and Boyarko helped her team reach the 4A state semifinals.
In three playoff games, Boyarko finished with 23 strikeouts and allowed just 11 earned runs. Boyarko also tallied seven hits, including a triple, and five RBIs.
Max Miller, Vanguard, jr., boys cross country – Miller owns 3A’s fastest time and showcased that speed last week.
During the 3A region 5 regional at Monument Valley Park, Miller clocked in at 16 minutes, 8.60 seconds to win the individual crown. This marked Miller’s only first-place finish this season, but not his swiftest time. Miller ran a 15:07.20 on Sept. 26 at the Desert Twilight.
Oliver Horton, Coronado, jr., boys cross country – Falling 13 seconds shy of a career-best time is an ideal spot ahead of the state meet.
Horton’s first-place finish, his fourth of the season, came at 14:37.84 at last week’s 4A region 5 regional. On Sept. 26, Horton ran a 14:23.90 for a personal record at the Desert Twilight at Toka Sticks Golf Course in Gilbert, Ariz.
Brooklyn Minihane, Colorado Springs Christian, jr., girls cross country – Minihane finished sub-20 in the Lions’ league meet Oct. 10, but this time the junior earned a victory.
Minihane placed first at 19:44.80 at the 2A region 3 regional at Hollydot Golf Course in Colorado City to give the Lions’ runner her second-best time of the year. At the Tri-Peaks/Black Forest Cross Country Championships on Oct. 10, Minihane hit a PR at 19:21.95.
Chamorra Cooper, Air Academy, jr., girls cross country – After placing seventh in the Kadets’ first race, Cooper has won four consecutive events.
Cooper clocked in at 17:20.68 for first at the 5A region 5 regional at deKoevend Park in Centennial. That gave Cooper her fastest time of the year and the Kadets junior is 12 seconds off her PR set last season during the Nike Cross Nationals Southwest Region race Nov. 23, 2024, at 17:08.48.
Exciting finishes
Football
Lewis-Palmer 21, Discovery Canyon 13
The Thunder entered the second quarter with a 13-7 lead over the Rangers, but Lewis-Palmer’s run game and defense punished Discovery Canyon all night.
The Rangers finished with 248 rushing yards led by Greg Moore’s 20 carries for 200 yards and a score, which paved the way for L-P’s victory over the Thunder.
After Moore bolted for an 80-yard touchdown, Discovery Canyon’s Brennan Ross matched that to knot the game at 7-7 in the first. Outside of Ross’s run, the Rangers allowed 141 total yards and kept the Thunder off the board after the first quarter.
Girls volleyball
Colorado Springs Christian 3, Manitou Springs 2
Colorado Springs Christian recovered after a shaky start, then bounced back after a tight fourth set to claw its way to a five-set victory (13-25, 25-7, 25-18, 21-25, 15-5) against Manitou Springs.
Of the Lions’ 18 matches, 10 have reached five sets including their previous three. In those contests, they’re 6-4 and own a 2-1 record after another 3-2 win Friday against Vail Mountain.
The Classical Academy 3, Falcon 2
The Falcons nearly ended their two-game losing streak to the Titans and built a 2-0 set lead including a 25-11 win in set two.
But TCA won the next three sets to improve to 3-0 in five-set matches against the Falcons and to 17-2 through 19 games. Falcon’s height couldn’t stymie Ashlyn Delaney as the junior outside hitter earned a career-high 27 kills.
Avery Jaeger also shined for the Titans and poured in a season-high 58 assist along with a season-high 136 ball-handling attempts.
Boys soccer
Air Academy 1, Cheyenne Mountain 1
These teams went 65 minutes without a score from either side. Then both schools netted a goal in the final 15 minutes.
Air Academy took a 1-0 lead when Tyner Amerine scored on a header to the back left of the net. Cheyenne Mountain’s Josh Slivka knotted the contest at 1-1 with a strike late in the match.
The Kadets, 4A’s defending champions and the No. 10 seed in the playoffs, remain without a victory against the Red-Tailed Hawks, the No. 12 seed, since 2021 when Air Academy beat Cheyenne Mountain 3-2.

TCA football wins league crown, improves win streak to 21
After the Titans dismantled D’Evelyn 48-7 Friday for the 2A Metro League title, TCA is 8-0 and owns a 21-game winning streak. The defending 2A state champions have not lost since 2023 and have outscored their opponents 302-84.
TCA has not allowed a team to score more than one touchdown in over a month and, during its win streak, has won 19 of 21 games by double figures.
The Titans close the regular season Friday with a matchup against Mitchell.
Palmer, Mitchell football pick up first wins
Winless no more, Palmer’s and Mitchell’s football teams triumphed on the same night. Kymani Dotison finished the Terrors’ tilt against Pueblo Centennial with two catches for two touchdowns in a 14-13 win against the Bulldogs. Quarterback Jaiden Vills finished 8-of-15 passing for 116 yards and two touchdowns.
Mitchell, which defeated Lincoln in 2024, earned another victory over the Lancers and won 12-8. This is the Marauders’ first nonforfeit road win since Oct. 5, 2018, when they beat Sierra 20-19.
