Colorado Springs woman accused of killing Uber driver, dumping his body in a field, court records say

A woman is accused of fatally stabbing a man and then dumping his body in a field north of Colorado Springs before driving off in his car, arrest records show.

The 38-year-old man was reported missing just before 3:45 a.m. Monday after his parents told the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office that he did not come home from his job as an Uber driver, the arrest documents state.

Authorities found his body with multiple stab wounds in the middle of a field near the intersection of Eastonville Road and Guy Ranch Point in the Black Forest area of unincorporated northern El Paso County.

Khayla Dawson, 27, was arrested late Monday in the man’s death and faces charges of first-degree murder, aggravated robbery and motor vehicle theft.

According to her arrest affidavit, Dawson got in the car with the man, who came to pick her up at her apartment at 185 Polaris Point Loop on the far north side of Colorado Springs shortly before midnight because she wanted to go for a “joy ride.”

Records from Uber obtained by law enforcement state the drop-off point was at 13305 Bent Spur Trail, a little less than four miles from where the man was found.

Dawson told a detective during an interview that the Uber driver tried to sexually assault her while threatening her with a knife after she fell asleep in the backseat of the car, according to her affidavit. She said she woke up to the driver touching her with a knife in his hand, and she defended herself by drawing a knife and stabbing the man in the neck.

After that, the vehicle accelerated through a barbwire fence and ended up in a field with horses.

The Uber records show the vehicle driving from Dawson’s apartment, located about 17 miles from where the man was found, toward Eastonville Road instead of the intended drop-off point, according to the affidavit.

The vehicle reportedly lingered in the field for about 90 minutes before driving back to Dawson’s apartment complex. After driving back to her apartment, deputies say Dawson canceled the Uber trip shortly before 3 a.m.

Deputies noted that Dawson’s cellphone data through the Uber app showed a gap from when the ride started to the time she arrived back at her apartment, meaning that her phone was either turned off, put in airplane mode or the app was closed.

Deputies found the man’s car keys and wallet inside Dawson’s apartment. A machete-type knife with an 18-inch blade was also found hidden behind a cabinet in her kitchen.

Another resident found the man’s phone at the bottom of a stairwell at the apartment complex and gave it to deputies. A bloody, black Nike tennis shoe matching one found in the field where the man was found also was recovered, inside a Dumpster inside the complex.

Online records show that Dawson competed in the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., in the shot put. She placed 22nd overall in the qualifying round; the top three earn a spot on the Olympic team.

Dawson attended Indiana University, competing in indoor and outdoor track and field in the shot put and discus events. Among her highlights was earning All-America honors in the shot put during the 2018-19 indoor and outdoor seasons, according to the university website.

Jail records show Dawson is being held at the El Paso County jail on a no-bond warrant.
