Monumental Impact

Monumental Impact announced it had received a $1,750 grant from Black Hills Energy. The funds will be used for programs in the areas of science, technology and engineering. These programs include competition teams, work-based learning, entrepreneurship, makerspace and community services.

Monumental Impact is a nonprofit that connects youth and community members with career pathways in technology, engineering, and entrepreneurship. It provide programs, equipment, mentorship, workspace, and real-world opportunities that empower people to explore, create, and compete.

“What sets us apart is that we don’t simulate the workplace — we are the workplace.” said Jeanette Breton, executive director of Monumental Impact.

Membership in Monumental Impact includes more than students and mentors. Adult makers, entrepreneurs and retired industry experts are also members. They engage shoulder-to-shoulder with learners, sharing real-world insights, sparking creativity and inspiring next-gen innovators.

“Being involved in community programs like Monumental Impact and helping the next generation of innovators and leaders emerge is part of Black Hills Energy’s mission,” said, Tom Henley, Senior Manager of Public Affairs at Black Hills Energy.

Gate delays

Due to the government shutdown, the U.S. Air Force Academy is pausing its Gate Support Program until further notice. Employees and visitors should allow additional time for entry.

“Security Forces personnel are working diligently to maintain the safety and security of the installation while managing these short-term manning constraints,” USAFA said in a release. “Expect delays at both the North and South gates and anticipate congestion surrounding special events such as football games or reunions.”

Suspect arrested

A suspect in two October bank robberies was arrested last week near Interquest Parkway and Interstate 25.

Colorado Springs Police say Maurice Keener, 47, was wanted in a bank robbery that occurred Oct. 8 at an undisclosed site in downtown Colorado Springs.

Keener was found in the 1100 block of Interquest Parkway Oct. 21 and taken into custody after a short foot pursuit. A search warrant was issued for his hotel room, where detectives reported finding evidence linking Keener to the Oct. 8 crime as well as a bank robbery on Oct. 20, according to the entry.

Town hall

A town hall meeting will be held on Nov. 5 from 6-8 p.m. at Monument Town Hall (645 Beacon Lite Road).

“Bring your questions and let’s chat about all things Monument,” an announcement says.

Mountain lion killed

According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, a mountain lion was struck and killed by a motorist on I-25 at some point during the early morning hours of October 23.

The collision took place near Tomah Road, with the mountain lion being a male that appeared to be about three to four years in age. Officials removed the carcass.

Tomah Road is located between Larkspur and Castle Rock, around Mile Marker 175. This is about 10 miles north of where the much talked about Greenland Wildlife Overpass is being constructed, with the estimated timeline indicating that will be open at some point in December 2025.
