Although Widefield lost its winning streak at regionals, the Gladiators remained poised.

They finished 2-1 at 4A’s region 6 regional Saturday in Elizabeth to earn a spot in next week’s state playoffs in Aurora. Widefield was one of six Pikes Peak area schools in action Saturday and one of two teams to earn state berths along with The Classical Academy in 3A.

Widefield and TCA joined Palmer Ridge, Cheyenne Mountain and Air Academy, which clinched state berths Friday.

The No. 11-seeded Gladiators pummeled No. 22 Palisade 16-3 in the first round and pitcher Olivia McEwen finished with seven strikeouts at region 6. But the Gladiators’ 13-game winning streak ended in the second round with a 15-0 loss to No. 6 Elizabeth (23-2) for Widefield’s first defeat since Sept. 19.

During the second round consolation game, Widefield (23-3) faced Palisade (14-11) once more and the Gladiators beat the Bulldogs 8-2 to secure a spot at state.

In 3A, where teams advanced to state by winning their first-round matchup, the No. 9 Titans won their opening contest 13-3 over No. 24 Rocky Ford to secure a state berth.

For the championship round, regional host No. 8 Strasburg ended the Titans’ chance at a regional crown and held TCA to one run in an 11-1 loss.

Discovery Canyon, the No. 11 seed which played in 4A’s region 5, dropped a pair of games with an 11-8 loss to No. 5 Pueblo Central and an 11-9 loss to No. 21 Mead.

In 5A, Vista Ridge also lost two games with an 8-5 defeat against No. 8 Grand Junction and a 7-3 loss to No. 23 Legacy.

Pine Creek narrowly missed a state berth and finished 1-2 in the region 7 tournament. The Eagles (20-5) beat No. 23 Arapahoe 8-3 in the first round but Pine Creek, the No. 10 seed, followed with a 10-2 loss to No. 26 Fossil Ridge in the second round.

The Eagles’ rubber match with Arapahoe saw the teams tied at 5-5 after six innings in the second round consolation game. The Warriors added three runs in the top of the seventh and escaped with a state berth, an 8-5 victory and ended the Eagles’ season. In 3A Sand Creek faced No. 4 seed Forge Christian in their bracket and the No. 29-seeded Scorpions struggled to find their offense in a 15-3 loss.
