After a man stabbed and “gravely injured” a police dog during a barricade situation in Colorado Springs on Wednesday, K-9 Roam pulled through an emergency surgery and survived the night, law enforcement officials said Thursday.

A man barricaded himself in a residence in the 7400 block of Gorgeted Quail Grove just before 11 a.m. Wednesday. When police deployed Roam on the suspect, the man stabbed Roam three times in the neck, head and abdomen, according to Police Chief Adrian Vasquez.

After an emergency surgery, Roam pulled through and “even wagged his tail a few times,” according to the Police Foundation of Colorado Springs. Roam had his left-hind leg amputated due to his injuries. The foundation says Roam will try to take some steps Thursday.

The Police Department has stab-proof vests for K-9 units, but they are not equipped for dogs younger than 20 months old and Roam is 18 months old, according to Vasquez.

Police arrested the suspect, Anthony Bryant, 30, on suspicion of burglary, obstruction, resisting arrest and attempted felony aggravated cruelty to law enforcement animals, according to police spokesman Ira Cronin.

District Attorney Michael Allen said a felony could be added if Roam does not survive due to the signing in 2024 of HB 1074, which specified a separate Class 4 felony if someone “knowingly or recklessly” kills or harms a law enforcement animal.

“They aren’t just a partner, they’re buddies, they truly become buddies,” Vasquez said. “I had a K-9 [and] they are with you so much, so often, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They become part of his family, and they’re part of the CSPD family.

“My heart goes out to our officer, and I ask that you keep Roam, our officer and his family in your thoughts and in your prayers.”
