The boys tennis season will wrap this weekend with several area athletes vying for individual crowns at the state tournament, which begins Thursday.

Denver Tennis Park and Denver South High School will host the 5A tournament while City Park in Pueblo will host 4A’s three-day event.

Each day, tennis competition begins at 9 a.m. with first round and quarterfinals starting Thursday. The semifinals begin Friday and championship rounds take place Saturday.

Below are a few area athletes to watch during the state tournament.

Braylon Desquitado, Pine Creek

The Eagles No. 1 singles player maintained his momentum from an impressive freshman campaign.

Desquitado finished as the 5A state runner-up in 2024 and lost in the championship in three sets to Regis Jesuit’s Alec Rodriguez, who owns a win over the sophomore this season.

As a freshman, Desquitado went 20-1 and he has a 12-3 record ahead of the state tournament. Desquitado and Rodriguez are on opposite sides of the bracket, meaning the pair could clash again in the title round.

Michael Tanner, Rampart

Tanner only lost twice en route to a 12-2 record at No. 1 singles. Pine Creek’s Desquitado defeated the Rams’ senior in a September dual and undefeated reigning state champ Regis’ Rodriguez dropped the senior at regionals.

However, Tanner dominated in those 12 victories. Tanner won each of his 12 matches in straight sets and relinquished three or more games just four times.

Tanner also has won three matches with a sweep three times this season. Tanner could face Desquitado in Thursday’s quarterfinals with a victory against Arapahoe’s Cale Brush in the first round.

Advait Jadhav, Pine Creek

He is another Eagles freshman with an impressive first season who’s looking for a state title. Jadhav finished the regular season 11-2 at No. 2 singles.

Palmer Ridge’s Victor Struski and (6-4, 6-0) and Rampart’s Manjaap Brar (6-3, 6-3) were the only competitors to push Jadhav to three games or more in his wins. Outside of Struski and Brar, Jadhav won each match dropping two or fewer games.

Leopold Laird, The Colorado Springs School

Laird played all singles positions for the Kodiaks and stacked 16 victories without a loss.

The CSS athlete went 8-0 at No. 3, 3-0 at No. 2 and is 5-0 at No. 1 singles. Laird began play at No. 1 singles Sept. 17 and cruised to an 8-0 win against Pueblo Centennial’s Auston Tafoya.

Since taking over the top position, Laird has ceded just two games and the junior has dropped nine games during his 16-0 streak.

Matt Olezeski, Fountain Valley

The Danes sophomore lost just two matches all season en route to a 13-2 campaign at No. 2 singles.

Olezeski won five of his six matches prior to regionals and, in the victories, only relinquished more than two games to an opponent twice – 6-3, 7-5 against Pueblo East’s Colter Borgstedt on Sept. 29.

Layne Berger, Lewis-Palmer

Berger has not lost since Sept. 19 and won six consecutive matches to end the year 12-2 at No. 3 singles for the Rangers. Both of Berger’s losses came in three-set matches, but the sophomore has thrived in two-set victories.

Berger owns three 6-0, 6-0 sweeps of opponents and only dropped five games in his last three regular-season contests.

Joshua Curtiss, Coronado

The Cougars’ lone qualifier for the state tournament holds a 15-4 record and has won tight and lopsided matches.

Curtiss beat Mullen’s Logan Wilson 7-6(7-3), 6-4 at the Air Academy High School Kadet Kickoff tournament Aug. 22. Curtiss also won a three-set tilt with Air Academy’s Travis DeBack 6-0, 5-7, 10-5 on Sept. 29 and swept two opponents during the regular season.

The Coronado No. 3 singles player faces DeBack in the first round and, if Curtiss and Wilson win their matchups, they’ll have a rematch in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
