Colorado Springs man shot at while following suspects in smash-and-grab burglary
Colorado Springs police are searching for several suspects involved in a smash-and-grab burglary that led to a shooting during the early morning hours of Wednesday.
Officers were called to the 3800 block of Maizeland Road around 3 a.m. after the caller said he had been shot at while following two suspicious vehicles, the Colorado Springs Police Department reported in an online blotter entry.
The caller told police he saw the cars in a parking lot on the northeast corner of the intersection of Maizeland Road and North Academy Boulevard, saying he believed they were “casing” one of the nearby businesses. However, the suspects saw him and drove off.
The caller said he followed the two cars in his until one of the drivers allegedly fired a gun mutiple times at him. Police say there were multiple bullet holes found on the car and also one on the victim’s baseball cap.
Multiple spent cartridge casings were recovered.
While attempting to identify the suspects, officers learned of a smash-and-grab burglary at a commercial business in the 300 block of Main Street in Security-Widefield, located about nine miles south of the shooting. Police believe one of the two vehicles were used to ram into the front door.
Officers found the car, a dark-colored sedan and impounded it. No arrests have been made at this time, police said.
