15-year-old suspect arrested in Colorado Springs after carjacking spree
A 15-year-old suspect is in custody after allegedly shooting at a mother with her three kids nearby during a car jacking crime spree in Colorado Tuesday.
The Colorado Springs Police Department was alerted to a report of a car jacking involving a handgun in Custer County on Tuesday around noon, according to an online police blotter entry. The suspect was believed to have traveled about 80 miles to Colorado Springs after stealing the vehicle.
Over an hour later, police were called to the intersection of South Murray and East Fountain boulevards after the suspect pointed a gun at a worker along the road before driving off.
An hour later, in the 200 block of North Union Boulevard, police say the suspect pointed a handgun at another person and tried to steal their vehicle but failed. Two more similar instances were reported around the city.
In the last encounter, the 15-year-old allegedly pointed his gun at several people near the intersection of East Fountain Boulevard and South Circle Drive, police said.
After multiple attempts, police say the suspect crossed the street and carjacked a mother’s vehicle after firing off shots at her with three children nearby.
Officers responded, and a short police chase ensued. The suspect was arrested and taken to a juvenile detention facility.
The teen is facing the following charges: attempted first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated robbery, three counts of attempted aggravated robbery, two counts of motor vehicle theft, 10 counts of felony menacing, vehicular eluding, illegal possession of a handgun by a minor, 4 counts of reckless endangerment and obstruction.
