Two juveniles were taken to a hospital after a near-fatal crash between two dirt bikes in El Paso County on Monday, a spokesperson from Colorado State Patrol told The Gazette.
A 13-year-old boy was airlifted to the hospital for life-threatening injuries after being hit in the head by the back tire of a dirt bike that was traveling in the air, according to a news release from the State Patrol. The other juvenile, a 14-year-old boy, sustained “serious” injuries following the collision.
The crash was reported around 5:44 p.m. and occurred at an abandoned golf course by Rolling Ridge Road near Security-Widefield.
According to preliminary reports, the 13-year-old was struck by the tire after his bike traveled under the other while the two riders were airborne.
When the investigating trooper arrived, both riders were found on the ground, separated from their bikes. Both were wearing motorcycle helmets at the time of the crash, according to the report.
