Gazette Preps rewind: Coronado cross country impresses at league meet; Mesa Ridge softball ends regular season on hot streak

14ners

Judah Rogers, Colorado Springs Christian, jr., boys soccer – Having a two-week break didn’t harm Rogers’ game.

Rogers scored four of the Lions’ six goals in a 6-0 victory against Thomas MacLaren on Oct. 7 to give him 13 for the season. This is Rogers’ third multigoal game in 2025 and his second with three or more goals for the Lions.

Ainsley Joseph, Fountain Valley, so., girls volleyball – Joseph delivered a statement with her serving in a matchup against The Colorado Springs School.

The sophomore libero finished with a career-high 10 aces and added 26 digs in the 3-0 win (27-25, 25-14, 25-21) against the Kodiaks last Tuesday. Joseph hit nine aces earlier this season against Monument Academy to set a then-career high. Four games later, Joseph dropped 10 on the Kodiaks to hand CSS its third consecutive loss.

Brenna Moerman, Doherty, fr., girls volleyball – After a pedestrian game by her standards, Moerman showed Liberty the true form of the Spartan.

Moerman hit a career-high 26 kills against Liberty and ended the match with a .432 hitting percentage. It Moerman’s third time this season at .400 or better and Moerman added a season-high 15 digs.

Avery Jaeger, The Classical Academy, jr., girls volleyball – TCA’s setter nearly put herself in Colorado’s record books with her performance against Falcon.

In the Titans’ 3-1 win (25-16, 25-8, 21-25, 25-19) against the Falcons, Jaeger tallied 51 assists for a season best. Jaeger added 31 more against Elizabeth on Thursday and Jaeger moved to seventh in 3A with 353 assists in 39 sets.

Jaeger needed 10 more assists for 61 and to tie three other players for 26th in the Colorado High School Activities Association’s record book. Jaeger’s 51 assists are the third-highest total of her career and nine shy of her career-high 60, which she earned as a sophomore.

Charlotte Riffle, Liberty, jr., softball – Prior to the Lancers’ matchup with Rampart, Riffle’s last home run occurred in August. Then, in a 24-14 victory against Rampart, Riffle hit two more.

The Lancers’ first baseman finished 3-of-5 hitting with two home runs, three runs and three RBIs. Riffle’s performance ended a seven-game hitless streak and gave the junior 13 hits and four homers this season.

Vivian Jack, The Classical Academy, jr., girls cross country – The Classical Academy visited New York on Saturday where Jack earned a top-five finish in the Manhattan University Cross Country Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.

Jack finished the 2.5-mile race in 14 minutes, 22.10 seconds for fourth place out of 108 runners in the Girls Eastern division. Jack’s placement was the best among all TCA runners.

Aspen Roberson, Palmer, fr., girls cross country – The Terrors’ youngest runner continues a brilliant season and added another first-place finish to her list of accomplishments.

At the Colorado Springs Metro League–South meet Friday, Roberson clocked in at 19:37.13 for first place at El Pomar Youth Sports Complex. Roberson’s time was more than 30 seconds swifter than second place. Roberson has finished first or second in six meets this season.

Carson Smith, Air Academy, sr., boys cross country – Smith’s top finish came in dominant fashion at the Kadets’ home meet Saturday.

During the Kadet XC Invitational at Air Academy High School, Smith clocked a 15:32.90 for first place and finished nearly 43 seconds faster than teammate Aiden Teran, who placed second.

This was Smith’s first first-place finish since 2023 at the NXR Southwest Region in Mesa, Ariz.

Chloe Bresnahan, Falcon, so., girls cross country – The Mustangs sophomore enjoyed her first-place finish so much last meet that she duplicated her success.

Bresnahan clocked in at 19:00.83 for first place at the Tri-Peaks League/Black Forest League Championships on Friday at Monument Valley Park.

This is Bresnahan’s second-career title and her second-fastest time of the season.

Michael Tanner, Rampart, sr., boys tennis – Tanner placed second in his regional tournament last week, but he’s performed admirably throughout the season. The Rams senior went 2-1 at the 5A region 2 tournament to qualify for this week’s individual state tournament.

Tanner has a 12-2 record and his only losses came to last year’s No. 1 singles runner-up, Pine Creek’s Braylon Desquitado, and No. 1 singles defending state champion, Regis Jesuit junior Alec Rodriguez, who is 25-0.

Joshua Curtiss, Coronado, jr., boys tennis – The Cougars No. 3 singles player entered regionals as the No. 1 seed and showed his opponents why.

Curtiss dropped just eight games in three matches during the 4A region 7 tournament and cruised to the regional crown last week. The Cougars’ junior amassed a 15-4 record and has not lost since Sept. 5 at the Pueblo County Invitational.

Ariana Campbell, Falcon, sr., softball – In her final two high school games in the circle, Campbell went 1-1 and fanned several batters.

In an 11-6 loss to The Classical Academy, Campbell finished with a career-high 12 strikeouts and closed the year with five Ks in an 18-2 victory over Sierra.

Campbell’s final three games as pitcher saw the senior allow just one earned run and deliver 18 strikeouts.

Jackson Schipfer, The Classical Academy, sr., football – Schipfer required just 13 carries to make a statement against Denver West.

Schipfer finished with 140 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the Titans’ 41-8 victory and helped TCA improve to 6-0.

The Titans running back has four consecutive games with 140 yards or more and has 723 yards on 96 carries with eight touchdowns in his five games.

Malachi Arnds, Vista Ridge, jr., football – Rushing for 126 yards is a strong outing for any player. Doing so on four carries is astonishing.

Arnds’ season high in yardage came in a 42-7 victory over Rampart on Saturday and marks his second consecutive game over 100 yards with five or fewer carries. For the season, Arnds has 17 rushes for 320 yards and three touchdowns.

The Grizzlies and Tigers combined for 30 hits and 30 runs in this contest, but a clutch hit with two outs in the top of the eighth paved the way for Mesa Ridge.
