Woodland Park School Board Candidate Column | Laura Gordon

100% ACCOUNTABILITY

As an involved parent and active volunteer in our schools and a longtime member of our community, I understand that accountability is essential for district leaders to earn the trust they need to lead effectively. My name is Laura Gordon and I’m asking for your vote for the District B (At Large) seat on the Woodland Park School Board. I will be a leader who seeks to be held accountable; so that together we can build a thriving, united school district where every student in every school is guaranteed an excellent education. My plan to establish accountability involves community engagement, financial stewardship and servant leadership.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Our schools and community are an ecosystem of students, parents, educators and community members who interact, support one another and depend on each other. I will seek to involve all stakeholders from the start by including you in the process of developing a mission and vision statement and creating a strategic plan to function as a guide during my years of service on the school board. I will promote the use of surveys and committees to advise on major decisions or issues. I will cultivate strong, collaborative relationships throughout our entire community to provide robust opportunities and services for our students and ensure they are equipped “to become productive, responsible and successful citizens.” (EE-1) These are just some of the steps that I will take to be a visible and effective bridge between our schools and our broader community.

FINANCIAL STEWARDSHIP

Our district is in critical need of effective management of our resources, so that we can stabilize and restore trust. I will use my financial education and business experience to help the district become financially secure and to explore innovative ideas for additional revenue streams to make sure our schools are well funded. Our teacher and student retention and any potential growth of our schools is dependent on hiring a superintendent who collaborates with our school board to unify our district and create a culture of respect, value and trust within our schools. I am committed to offering our students opportunities for higher academic education, as well as partnering with local businesses for technical and vocational opportunities. I will support the development of a 3/5/10 plan to address building maintenance needs. I will honor the duty I have to steward district resources responsibly on behalf of our taxpayers.

SERVANT LEADERSHIP

Education is a service for our children. As a school board member, I will lead this service by serving. I will show that I am listening by following up on ideas or concerns brought up during public comments. I will not participate in personal or political agendas. I will be an example of good citizenship and integrity by following laws and policies and monitoring/evaluating the superintendent and board as scheduled. I will be a leader who is already known and trusted by those I would serve in our schools. As a bridge between our schools and community, I will serve Woodland Park School District with 100% accountability.
