Colorado Springs Switchbacks routed in make-up match at Charleston Battery
Saturday, the Colorado Springs Switchbacks faced a downpour of rain that led to the postponement of their match at Charleston Battery. It was raining in Monday’s make-up match too, raining goals for Battery.
Charleston handed Colorado Springs its worst loss of the season in a 5-0 rout on Monday at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant, S.C.
Charleston defender Leland Archer’s goal in the 39th minute had the hosts up 1-0 at halftime before the match was postponed on Saturday. The Switchbacks (9-12-7) got a second chance as the match was restarted from the opening kickoff on Monday, but Battery wasted no time regaining its advantage.
Charleston midfielder Aaron Molloy’s free kick attempt bounced on the Switchbacks’ wall in the seventh minute, but Molloy was quick on the rebound and buried the second-chance opportunity.
Battery has two of the top-three goal scorers in the USL Championship this season, league-leader Cal Jennings and Matt Meyers. The duo made the most of Switchbacks defender and captain Matt Mahoney’s turnover in the 12th minute as Jennings found Myers, who finished inside the 18-yard box to double the lead for Charleston.
Molloy earned assists on Charleston’s third and fourth scores. First, he sent a cross in for fellow midfielder Emilio Ycaza for a header and a score in the 25th minute. In the 79th minute, he sent in a corner kick that found the head of Battery Nathan Dossantos, who snuck the ball inside the near post.
Battery midfielder Viggo Ortiz scored the final goal of the match in the 83rd minute, sending a strike off the hands of Switchbacks keeper Christian Herrera and into the goal.
Colorado Springs has now dropped four of its last five matches and has just two matches remaining of the season. The club is still above the Western Conference playoff line in eighth place. This weekend, the Switchbacks host their final home game of the season against Las Vegas Lights FC.
