Abandoned tunnels said to be ‘haunted’ with passersby reporting odd sights and sounds

An ominous, spiked fence guards abandoned train tunnels tucked away in the hills above Colorado Springs. The fence indicates a closure, with folklore pointing to a dark past of the area.

Located in the North Cheyenne Cañon Area, several of the old Gold Camp Road Tunnels are reportedly haunted, with stories of spirits lingering throughout the eerie passages.

According to Atlas Obscura, there were originally nine passageways dug into the hills, but three eventually collapsed due to age and vandalism. There are now three tunnels in total, with one sealed off by the menacing gates and located past where cars can drive – vehicles can travel through the other two.

According to folklore, one of the remaining tunnels collapsed while a school bus was driving through it, killing the driver and children in the bus. Although there is no record of the bus crash, the kids’ spirits now reportedly haunt the tunnels, leaving tiny handprints in the dust of cars. Visitors have also reported being scratched and groped by unseen spirits, according to Atlas Obscura.

Other stories include hikers and mountain bikers hearing children laughing, playing, or even screaming inside the tunnels, and some people have even reportedly seen the figure of a man walking to the back of their car to push it.

Legend also has it that other tunnels in the area are haunted by the spirits of workers killed during construction. Uncover Colorado reports that the area has seen numerous fatal car accidents and workers killed during tunnel construction.

If you’re feeling brave enough to visit the tunnels, you can drive through the first and second Gold Camp Road Tunnels via the Gold Camp Road (a breathtaking drive that winds its way through North Cheyenne Cañon), although it’s important to note that the winding dirt and gravel road does become narrow and rocky at times. Tunnel three is accessible via hiking, biking, or riding a motorcycle – but only viewable from behind the closure fence.

With a spooky history and stories of creepy occurrences, the Old Gold Camp Road Tunnels are one of Colorado’s most haunted locations. If you’re curious and brave enough, venture out to the tunnels to perhaps experience a real-life ghost story for yourself.
