Zombie Hunting Licenses are now available through the Town of Monument. So, what exactly does this mean?

The licenses are a fundraising effort from the Town of Monument to aid the creation and completion of the Heart of Monument Play Park. Now, citizens and community members are able to purchase a Zombie Hunting License from the town.

The Heart of Monument Play Park is a joint effort between the Town of Monument, the Monument Hill Kiwanis Club, and Monument Community Presbyterian Church, which is donating the land while the Kiwanis lead fundraising.

As community input has been a strong aspect towards the design of the park, fundraising includes a $50,000 matching pledge, tiered donor recognition and events like a community garage sale. The park is planned as a universally accessible space with inclusive play features, sensory elements and pedestrian connections, with ongoing donations key to moving from design to construction.

Town manager Madeliene VanDenHoek said the idea for the Zombie Hunting License fundraiser came from Dan Ungerleider and the town’s planning department.

“We figured if people are going to chase zombies through the streets, they should at least do it legally,” VanDenHoek said. “Plus, the permit fees help raise funds for the ‘Heart of Monument Play Park.’. We’re not just raising money, we’re raising awareness. … And possibly the dead.”

The Zombie Hunting License isn’t just a permit. It’s a conversation starter, a fundraiser and an excellent way to explain to your in-laws why you spent the weekend wearing blaze orange and taking selfies with props. Buy the permit, practice your double-tap for the camera and then donate the rest of your bravery, or spare change, to the Heart of Monument Play Park. Nothing says community spirit like pretending the world’s ending so kids can have another all-inclusive park.
