NWS confirms fourth highest tornado in Colorado history on Sawtooth Mountain

The National Weather Service in Pueblo has confirmed a tornado occurred on Sawtooth Mountain on Sept. 13, according to a post by the agency.

The tornado occurred on the northern slopes of the mountain and lasted five minutes with peak wind speeds of 88 mph.

Touching down around 11,300 feet, that elevation tied for the fourth-highest that a tornado has landed in Colorado history. It was also the third tornado ever confirmed in Saguache County.

The state’s only other tornadoes to occur at or above 11,300 feet were at:

  • Purple Mountain summit at 12,600 feet in May 2021
  • Mount Blue Sky at 11,900 feet in July 2012
  • Longs Peak at 11,400 feet in August 1984
  • Green Horn Mountain at 11,300 feet in May 2017

A spokesperson with the NWS told The Gazette tornadoes at higher elevations may be confirmed at a higher rate in recent years because of advances in phone and satellite technology.
