Black Bear Road in southwestern Colorado is closed indefinitely because of a vehicle that is “teetering off the edge” of the popular high-altitude mountain pass, San Miguel County authorities said.

A man from South Carolina drove up the pass east of Telluride in a white Kia Telluride – yes, that’s SUV’s make and model – despite being told not to and got stuck just past Bridal Veil Falls, with the wheels hanging off the side of the road, the San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook. It’s unsafe for anyone to drive around the SUV.

The one-way dirt road starts from the 11,018-foot summit of Red Mountain Pass on U.S. 550, cresting to 12,840 feet in elevation as it navigates above Telluride. The road passes Bridal Veil Falls, the highest waterfall in Colorado.

“The vehicle requires tow, and it is unknown at this point when this can happen,” the Sheriff’s Office said in the post.

Bridal Veil Road up to the waterfall is closed just past the parking lot, prohibiting access to the Via Ferrata. However, Bridal Veil Trail remains open.
