Colorado Springs man arrested after driving stolen vehicle 100 mph in Custer County
Custer County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Colorado Springs man traveling at an estimated 100 mph in the county on Tuesday, according to a news release by the office.
Deputies responded from Mackenzie Junction and Westcliffe to locate a vehicle that was reported stolen around 12:22 p.m. on Tuesday from the Westcliffe and Silver Cliff area.
The release stated a deputy saw the vehicle traveling 100 mph on Rosita Road toward Colorado 69. A second deputy traveling south on Colorado 69 confirmed the vehicle’s speed was 101 mph and headed toward Westcliffe.
To prevent the suspect from entering a more populated area of town, another deputy was positioned to stop the vehicle. At 12:33 p.m., deputies stopped the suspect and pinned the vehicle near the Alta Gas Station in Westcliffe.
Deputies arrested Christopher Colquitt, 19, of Colorado Springs, and charged him with:
- Motor vehicle theft
- Reckless driving
- Speeding in excess of 40 mph over the posted limit
- Failure to report a traffic crash
- Vehicular eluding
