Five area schools to represent boys tennis in upcoming team tournament
The Colorado High School Activities Association released brackets Monday for the state boys tennis dual team tournament. First round matches are scheduled to start Wednesday.
Of the 32 teams to earn spots in this year’s tournament, the Pikes Peak Region will have five schools battling for a slot in the finals at Denver Tennis Park on Oct. 21. The highest seed will host each matchup through the semifinals.
Pine Creek is the lone 5A team to qualify and drew the No. 16 seed, meaning the Eagles face No. 1 Regis Jesuit, last year’s state runners-up. The Raiders finished first at each tournament this season and won each dual 6-1 or better.
The Eagles’ No. 1 singles player Braylon Desquitado and No. 2 player Advait Jadhav both have monumental tasks ahead as their opponents Alec Rodriguez and William Dickey have a combined 39-1 record.
Rodriguez (21-0), the Raiders’ No. 1 singles player, defeated Desquitado last season in the individual tournament 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 to earn the crown. For Desquitado, who is 11-1 prior to Monday’s match against Doherty, this is an opportunity for redemption before this year’s individual tournament, which starts Oct. 16.
In 4A, Discovery Canyon (No. 8), Air Academy (No. 10), Lewis-Palmer (No. 12) and Cheyenne Mountain (No. 13) all qualified for the tournament.
The Thunder are the lone area school to host a match and face No. 9 Dawson School at 3 p.m. Wednesday. They are 8-1 this year and their last loss occurred Sept. 5 against Rampart, which earned a 4-3 dual victory.
Since then, the Thunder have won seven consecutive dual matches. Jack Walton, No. 2 singles, owns the best individual record at 8-5 and has won five of six contests. The Thunder’s four doubles slots each have at least nine wins with No. 3 players Asher Davis and Andrew Hiles at 12-1.
